Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
Global Volunteers enlists health care professionals on one-, two-, and three- week service programs in Asia, Africa, South America, the Caribbean, the South Pacific and Europe. Projects in the Cook Islands, Ecuador, Ghana, Romania, Poland and Tanzania particularly offer health-care service opportunities year-around. For instance, in Quito, Ecuador, the organization provides basic health care, rehabilitative services, and medical day care for disabled children, many of whom are poor or abandoned. Special medical teams are also sent to China. Jamaica often seeks dentists. In addition to providing medical assistance, other volunteer work is available such as teaching English, repairing buildings, and nurturing babies. Depending on their specialty, dentists, nurses, physicians and medical students are needed to extract teeth, test eyesight and distribute eyeglasses, check blood sugar levels and blood pressures, perform basic physical exams, examine newborns, provide prenatal care and, in some cases, perform outpatient surgeries. 1-2 week stay is typical.
